Niko Skorpio

Niko Skorpio is a producer, composer and sound-artist working primarily in the fields of cinematic dark-ambient soundscapes and experimental electronica. Since 1990 he has explored various genres and styles with several different bands and solo projects, often reflecting his deep interest in post-industrial music and certain occult/esoteric undercurrents. The resulting sound is described as “Hermetic Fusion Musick”.
Some of Niko’s other projects, past and present, are Hæretici 7o74, Rajapïnta, Reptiljan, Metaorganism, A\H, Thergothon, This Empty Flow etc.
Diversity aside, one thing is common with all of Niko’s music projects — the obsession to explore the unknown areas between and beyond established music genres. His music has been described as experimental, avant-garde and unclassified. For years of pioneering work, Niko has been heralded as one of the most important figures in modern Finnish underground music.
Niko also works as a visual artist & graphic designer under the business name MooPica Design. Specialized in serving the music industry, under MooPica Niko has designed dozens of album covers, websites, advertising campaigns and related works for clients worldwide. “Listening to this album is almost like taking a walk through insanity itself. I can only assume that this would be what it would be like to live inside the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic. Slowly rocking yourself back and forth and singing along with the demented voices in your mind. All in all this album was very enjoyable. A welcome change to my usual rotation of metal and straight dark ambient. One thing I am sure of: Niko Skorpio is beyond talented, and only someone with an extremely demented mindset could come up with music this foreboding and mentally destructive.” (Heathen Harvest on Escape from Heaven)
“The nine tracks of the CD are permeated with will of experiment with emotions and music and most of them sound like an obscure soundtrack where melody surface time to time.” (Chain DLK on Escape from Heaven)
“Exploding all conventions, Niko Skorpio explores regions rarely visited. This mix of doom, experimental and delicate dark ambience pleases more than it frightens, yet without seeming to try. In the end we come out of this experience with a head full of new possibilities and musical arrangements (this, the same brain that is usually too narrow to understand the complex and steep steps). An unforgettable and intoxicating experience.” (GIAG on To give light to that which is without)
“It’s dark, it’s deep and it plays the card of mood music very well.” (Vital Weekly)
“Often exhibiting ritual tendencies, sometimes exposing tense dark ambient soundscapes and at other times sinister nightmarish undertones, Skorpio acknowledges his influences but firmly stamps his own imprint on his work.” (Side-Line on Escape from Heaven)
“The chaotic nature of this album is confusing in the beginning, but once you get used to the style, the album proves to be very enjoyable and downright genious.” (Kuolleen Musiikin Yhdistys on Stainway to Heaven)
“The tracks really are a combination of dark droning ambient and some sample oriented electro madness, recycling some funk and eastern psychedelic records and just about anything you could imagine, really making it a diverse and fresh listening experience. Limbo in C Major must be my favourite track off this CDr, being a truly intriguing piece of droning dark ambient with a clear direction.” (Prospective on ChAmber MooSick)
“Imagine if trip-hop star Tricky gave up the reefer, moved to Finland, and got depressed and lost his mind… and you’ll be on the right path.” (Black Box Radio on Delta Amoeba)
